San Marino, the most ancient Republic in the world

The Republic of San Marino is the most ancient democracy in the world. Actually, its democratic system is based on the ancient Arengo, an assembly that originally gathered together all heads of family of the territory. As time went by, the Arengo delegated its power to the Great and General Council, which is still nowadays the Parliament of the Republic. It is made up by 60 members elected by the citizens every five years.

The Great and General Council appoints the two Captains Regent (they are the Heads of State and of the State Congress) who remain in office for six months. The investiture ceremony of the Captains Regent is on April 1st and October 1st every year.

The executive power is exercised by the State Congress, made up of nine ministers (Secretaries of State).

The San Marino territory is divided into nine “Castles” (townships) - San Marino Città, Serravalle, Borgo Maggiore, Faetano, Domagnano, Chiesanuova, Acquaviva, Fiorentino, Montegiardino – corresponding to the ancient parishes of the Republic. Every Castel is managed by a Castle Council chaired by a Captain, elected every five years.

San Marino has a population of over 30 thousand inhabitants, with the addition of about 12 thousand citizens living outside the territory.

The San Marino territory (61 sq.km) is mostly hilly and has the shape of an irregular quadrilateral with Mount Titano in the middle (lat. 43°, 56’, 06” – long. East of Greenwich 12°, 26’, 56”, - 750 metres a.s.l. and 10 Km. as the crow flies from the Adriatic Coast).

San Marino: a walk in history, sport, events and culture

Every year the Republic is visited by about 3 millions tourists, attracted by the enchanting views overlooking the Adriatic Coast and the surrounding valleys, by the medieval traditions celebrated in the historic and institutional events, by the great sports appointments such as Moto GP. But San Marino is also a land for shopping, with its typical shops in the Historic Centre and the modern shopping centres at the foot of the Mount Titano. Tax Free is applied in San Marino.

The Palazzo dei Congressi Kursaal is one of the most prestigious architectural facilities in the city of San Marino. It was built as a gaming house in the early 1950's, it has splendid halls with an unparalleled view immediately looking out on the Third Tower.

It has been specially restored and restructured to offer a full range of higly qualified, tecnologically advanced services. It can host several events at the same time, with an overall capacity of 750 people.
